MLA Formatting and Style

Modern Language Association style is used to write papers and cites sources. MLA provides writers with a format for referencing their sources with the help of parenthetical citation in their essays and works cited pages. The use of MLA format keeps the writers safe from being accused of performing plagiarism.

Guidelines

  • Keep in mind that you must print out on a standard white 8.5 x 11-inch paper.
  • Double-space the text of your paper and use fonts like Times New Roman or any other acceptable and formal font. Keep in mind that whatever font which you choose, the MLA recommends that the regular and italics type style contrast each other to such a level that they are individually noticeable.
  • Leave only one space after punctuation marks or periods, but it depends on the instructor’s instructions.
  • The margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides.
  • While using an MLA format make sure that you use the Tab Key as opposed to pushing the Space Bar five times.
  • Create a header for numbering all the pages in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top. Furthermore, you have to follow the instructions provided by the instructor. There is instance where the instructor would want you to remove the number on your first page.
  • Use italics for the titles and only when necessary to give emphasis.
  • If you will include any endnotes, include them on a separate page before your works cited page. Name the section Notes either on centered or unformatted.

Making the layout of the first page

  • Only make the title page for your paper if the instructor instructs you to. Otherwise, do not make the title page.
  • In the upper-left hand corner of your paper provide the following information:
  1. Your name
  2. Instructor’s name
  3. The course
  4. The date

Note: Make sure that you used double-spaced text.

  • Double-space and center the title. Make sure that you do not underline, italicize or use quotation marks as your title. Write the title in the standard capitalization, not in all capital letter.
  • Double-space between the title and the first line of the text.
  • Use quotation marks and/or italics when you are using other people’s works in your title, the same way you do with the text.
