Research Paper on Gender gap in higher education

In the past years, it has been evident that an increasing number of women were deprived of higher education. Only men tend to continue their education after schooling which is why most of the companies today are owned by men. This was because of many societal reasons. Most of the countries in the world run under a system of patriarchy. This was widespread in the 1700s but with later reforms in the law, women gained a greater share of power in competition to men. Higher education became a luxury for the lower class people in the society. The increasing costs of college fee and the difficult admission process also created a gender gap. Women have been able to reverse this trend as more of women enroll in higher education than men. Despite the history of gender discrimination, women have not given up and have become more successful than men in achieving fame and personal growth. The subjects offered at the high school were also gendered biased. Women were discouraged to take mathematics and engineering as their option because these subjects were claimed as ‘male subjects’. However, schools have now eradicated this entire system and women are now free to choose whichever subject she wants. So the trend of more women applying in higher education than men is caused by various factors. One factor is the inequality of pay in the job market. Men with the same qualifications are paid higher, even if their performance is poor.

Therefore, women realize that in order to earn more, they need to have the best education. This way they can get more pay on the basis of their education and would not have to face discrimination at lower levels of work status. The reason why fewer men are enrolling in higher education is that they tend to join the army or naval forces. Women make up more of the population than men; which could also be a reason for more women seen in universities rather than men. Also, men tend to do diplomas and short courses and can lose their focus easily by settling on a lower paid job.

There should be awareness among all students of both genders about the advantages of a higher education degree. Scholarships should be provided to the need base students so that their economic situation can not come under the road of their education. The need for more women-oriented job should be made even if they have only completed their schooling. Equal pay should be granted for both the genders so that the gender war can come to a halt.
