Sample Thesis Paper

It wasn’t until CIA operations near the Sino Burmese border and in Laos aided in the creation of the Golden Opium Triangle that Heroin production came to the levels where it is today. This area of the Golden Opium Triangle is the second largest producer of Heroin. The largest producer in the world is Afghanistan. Opium production in Afghanistan has always been a staple of the country and the primary source of illegal income for its Cartels. During the Russian invasion of Afghanistan the Taliban kept a strict control on the level of opium which was planted in their land. In fact certain Taliban warlords imposed the death penalty on the growers and abusers of opium (Alexander Cockburn). However, after the War on terror brought the country under the leadership of Hamid Karzai, the growth of opium in the country has reached astronomical levels. Due to the inherent poverty among the population farmers have taken to growing poppy seeds which have now become the primary source of finance for the Taliban. Between the years of 2004 and 2005 farmers planted 60% more poppy seeds than the year before making Afghanistan the number one country in the world as a source of heroin. It would grow a further 17% by 2007 and its cultivation would be seemingly protected by the Afghani government themselves (Schweich).
