As the cost of internet and by conjunction computer technology has decreased many universities have found new avenues of economy by reaping the benefits of distance based learning. Distance based learning is a natural extension of this technology being used to offer online courses to college students, employees and business professionals. This has created a teaching forum whereby people from any geographical area can attend online classes at their leisure from the comfort of their own homes.

A recent study by the national foundation for educational research found that the use of e-learning by lecturers had a reported increase in retention rate of the students by 20%. They also found that they were far more effective in organizing, planning, preparing and sharing materials and could more easily meet the needs of their students. They also said that students were more effective at research and presentation work (Golden, McCrone, Walker And Rudd 2006). Another survey by the instruction technology council found that there was a 15% increase in enrolments in distance education from fall 2005 to fall 2006. They also found that the retention rate in these students averaged at 72% (Instructional Technology Council  2007).
