Propaganda in Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9-11
Propaganda, in the perspective of the movie Fahrenheit 9-11, can be considered to be no more different than exaggeration of facts or the presentation of plausible scenarios in a manner such that basic perceptions can be influenced (Moore and Bush). It is an attempt to change a bent of mind that is already present. It merits highlighting at this point that propaganda comes across as the reflection of an idea in a negative light; hence negating the idea altogether and requiring the target audience to reconsider the acceptance of the idea in question. In Fahrenheit 9-11, propaganda can be seen as the sequential presentation of assertions that are meant for the singular purpose of altering the way in which the audience perceives the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
There is little doubt in the fact that there are differing and significantly conflicting schools of thought when it comes to the identification of propaganda. For instance, the school of thought that subscribes to the perception that “history is written by the victors” may find propaganda to be nothing more than a belated attempt made by a second party to win the hearts and minds of people that have already been won by a first party (Symcox and Wilschut 290). To them, the execution of propaganda may be nothing more than the dispersion of information. It is therefore evident that the essence of propaganda remains the same; to influence the thinking and perceiving process.
