When we define Hinduism it does fit in the mold set by many of the world’s religions. It is not based upon a single scripture, does not follow any one individual and does not have any central organization. It does not follow any doctrine, any teachings; rather it is a set of beliefs and traditions that are created for the primary purpose of bringing man closer to God.

It is not limited by social or political concerns. Nor is it obligatory for any one person to follow a particular guideline to practicing the religion. However, the Hinduism way of life can be based on the readings of ancient scriptures or sages such as the Vedas and the Upanishads. However, Hindus do not believe in any one teaching or in any one path instead they believe in the dharma. The dharma refers to any spiritual path that can lead a person to God (Flood, 1996).

Dharma is best described when it is analyzed by using a fruit tree. The roots of the tree represent the Vedas and the Upanishads, while the broad trunk symbolizes the spirituality of wise and holy men while the branches denote the various theologies which are differentiated by the fruits of the tree according to shapes and sizes which in turn symbolize the various factions and sub factions (Flood, 1996).
