The book, “Go Tell It on the Mountain”, written by James Baldwin, is set during the Great Migration period. This was between the years 1910 to 1930. During this time, almost 2 million African-American slaves migrated from the Southern States of America to the Northern and Midwest states.

During the Great American Civil War, there were resentments amongst the two major states in America; the Northern states and the Southern states. Nevertheless, after the northern states won the civil war, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. This ensured the freedom of the blacks who were kept as slaves in the feudal form of society in the South, and freed hundreds of slaves. As a result, there was a huge migration of the blacks, they escaped from the brutality of their landlords in South and moved to the Northern states of America. The Northern states were more close to the current day capitalist societies, owing to the early industrial revolution at these places. Therefore, the Northern states provided the African-Americans are more egalitarian state to live in, emancipating them from their earlier lives of slavery (Donovan et al. 25-41).
