The company is known for its unique approach through which it delivers computer systems to consumers once they place their orders. The computer systems are put together in accordance with the customer’s required system specifications and therefore each system becomes tailored to customer needs and demands.Dell was formed in 1984 and currently employs over seventy five thousand employees across the world. With its headquarters in Round Rock, Texas, USA, Dell not only provides personal computers but computing solutions that incorporate servers, notebooks, peripherals, printers, net books and televisions amongst others. Almost all of its products are sold in a configure-to-order manner and a majority of Dell’s marketing and promotional campaigns boast on Dell’s capability to provide consumers with the exact computing solutions that they need. Besides the one in Austin, Texas, Dell currently has plans operational in North Carolina, China, India, Poland, Brazil, Ireland, Malaysia and Mexico.Key consumers for Dell and other players in the industry include large accounts with corporate and government organizations as well as small and medium businesses. The competitive landscape for Dell is such that it is faced with IBM, Acer and Hewlett-Packard as prime competitors while consumer purchase trends are influenced significantly by consumer and business income. The industry is primarily capital intensive, making it difficult for new entrants to enter. In the case of Dell, the primary strategy is one that is based on the promotion of technological innovation and price cuts. Dell’s products span well beyond personal computers and notebooks and well into network servers and high grade data storage systems (Hoover’s, Inc., 2009). Considering changing trends, the company also provides services such as infrastructure consultation, asset recover, systems integration, and training and support services.
