Kurt Lewin’s model of change is one that perceives change as a process that spans across three fundamental steps. According to this model, change comes about as the resultant of different forces acting in directions that tend to counter each other. For instance, driving forces and restraining forces may be present in a scenario at the same time and change may come about in the form of a resultant of these forces. Lewin elaborated that change brought about in this fashion could be divided into three steps as a result of which the shift in the scenario was brought about (Kritsonis, 2005). This shift in the environment was what Lewin considered to be change in its most literal form.
The first step in Lewin’s three-step process of change is the stage in which the scenario is brought out of its state of equilibrium. The essence of this stage lies in the unfreezing of the scenario from its current state. This calls for the unfreezing of the state of the scenario so that the forces currently being subjected to the system can be subjected to alterations. If the system of the scenario is in a state of equilibrium, Lewin notes that it is because the forces that the system is under are in a state of bilateral conformity as a group (Kritsonis, 2005). Lewin’s considers the abolishment of this group conformity to be vital for the bringing about of change in the scenario.
