Thesis: Methods of Study used in Physical Therapy

Sample Thesis Paper

“We will use the patient preference trial to achieve the aims and objectives of the study. Via a small interview in the initial stages the patients will be asked about their preferences and their willingness to be randomized. Hence patients will be who have strong treatment preferences and are unwilling to be randomized will be placed according to their own choice.

Those patients showing no strong preference towards treatments modes or those who even though prefer one therapy over another are willing to be randomized, will be randomized conveniently and placed into groups. Therefore comparative groups will be achieved as a result.” These will be;

  1. patients with strong preference to treatment A
  2. patients to be randomized to treatment A
  3. patients with strong preference treatment B
  4. patients randomized to treatment B

So on and so forth for all the different forms of physiotherapy.

“In all forms of non randomized comparisons analysis is uncertain due to uncontrolled confounding factors and therefore comparison of two randomized arms should at least be an option and be done to validate the results.

It will be best to treat the analysis of the non-randomized variables as observational studies and which have known confounding factors which need to be adjusted for analytical purposes. [By randomizing all consenting patients into the trial we will create a two tier advantage. We will have the   advantage of the partially randomised design–that is, gathering information on the effect of preference on outcome–but we can also retain the rigour of a full randomised design.]  We will use the randomization status as a covariate for analytical purposes.
