The conditions in which they are kept are similar to the conditions in which the slaves of the olden times were kept. Once caught in the shackles of the modern day slave drivers who run this trade, the fear that is instilled in the hearts of the victims for the safety of their families is used to isolate them from any forms of rescue or any attempts to reach out. Also, since their documents are confiscated, they are left stranded and at the mercy of their captors. The victims are subjected to physical abuse and are frequently subjected to sexual assaults. Even more so horrendous is the fact that the victims are more than often pushed into a life of prostitution even if they do not desire to do so. We can therefore surmise that the victims of these traffickers are in reality held hostage by the safety of their loved one’s lives and their documents. In 2007, a story published on MSNBC.com told the tale of two transfer students who fall prey to one of these networks (Kahng, 2007). The author of the article, Grace Kahng, presents a horrifying picture of how women are framed into travelling to a location that they had no intention of travelling to, and once they have been moved to their destination, they are stripped off all their documents and dignity, and kept in a constant state of fear and terror in order to exploit them. Victims such as these are severely underpaid and subjected to continuous physical exploitation. In most cases, the victims are not remunerated in any way at all and are ill-treated to brutal extents which causes not only physical damage, but also psychological damage that later has long term implications upon the victim.
