Throughout the course of the book, it is evident that while the author has no desire to present a biographical perspective of the rise of the Nazis, he attempts to bring the reader to a position from where the series of events that led to and eventually contributed to the expansion and progress of the Nazi Empire can be appreciated in a historical perspective. It is imperative to note that the author does not choose to focus on Adolf Hitler or his role in the progress of the Nazis but on the circumstances and their consequences that gave way to Hitler and the establishment of the Third Reich.
Although the author does not choose to come forth and establish a concrete thesis statement, the author’s perspective becomes clear from the very first chapter when he states:
“The National Socialists were the ultimate beneficiaries of Weimar’s recurrent crisis, but Hitler’s rise to power was neither straightforward not inevitable” .
