A day later the armies of Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Iraq invaded Israel which ended in a victory for Israel and led to their border stretching beyond what was originally proposed by the U.N. A number of refugees who fled during the war eventually made their way back. Many Palestinian refugees who lived on the west bank which was controlled by Egypt at the time were armed by the Egyptian government and eventually became the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1964 (MidEastWeb.Org, 2008).

Due to their continued attacks and the various threats hurled at Israel from Egypt and their various Arab neighbors Israel preemptively attacked Egypt in 1964 starting the Six-Day War. At the end of this war they controlled the Gaza strip and the West Bank (MidEastWeb.Org, 2008).

On February 3, 1969 Yasser Arafat was elected the Chairman of the PLO. They were eventually expelled to Jordan where armed conflict caused their migration again to Lebanon. They launched attacks at various civilian Israeli targets some of which included the hijacking of Sabena Flight 572, the Lod Airport and Munich massacre (MidEastWeb.Org, 2008).

The 1973 Yom Kippur War between the Syrians and the Egyptians against the Israelis eventually ended in ceasefire but laid the foundation for further peace talks with the Camp David Accords in 1978 (MidEastWeb.Org, 2008).
