Patients in ICU are vulnerable people who have gone through a lot as a result of their illness. At that moment in ICU, they are in a critical condition, meaning that they are not sure about whether they will survive or not. This makes them and their loved ones to be demanding, needy, fearful or angry. Sometimes, they cannot stop crying, perhaps as a result of the pain, and other times, at the prospect of life facing them.
It is challenging for ICU nurses to take care of these patients. It can also be an experience that is physically and emotionally draining, and unless they are able to manage their own emotions, they might end up being angry with their patients, or themselves. Conversely they might get too involved with their patients, and just in case they do not manage to survive; the nurses themselves will be affected.
