Social Welfare is a term which encompasses all the measures taken on the part of governments, organizations or individuals to benefit people in need. When welfare is spoken of it usually involves improvement within the financial situation of individuals. However, this term may also include other factors which improve the individual’s quality of life. This may consist of aiding anything from physical rehabilitation, to state of employment, to mental health. Historically, social welfare was mainly a function of singular individuals or charities.
Eventually however, countries adopted programs which would allow them to help their citizens. Currently, in the world there are several countries in the world which have set up a framework for social welfare providing aid to the poor, the disabled, dependent children and the elderly. Giving consideration to the term generally however, reveals a meaning which focuses on the physical and psychological needs of the individual (Macarov, 1995).
