What could be done to help the hundreds of millions of people in India and Bangladesh who now drink contaminated water?
According to experts, arsenic poisoning is almost not curable. However, symptoms can be reduced to certain extent though vitamins consumption. The only way to avoid arsenic poisoning for large population of Bangladesh and India is to find some alternative source of safe drinking water. The foremost task should be to discover which wells are safe and which ones are poisonous. Several authorities have advised citizens to start consuming surface water sources. According to researchers, old technologies can also be reutilized and improved to make surface water more drinkable, for example, removing bacteria by just sand filtering surface water.
What if it was our money that installed the tube wells in the first place? Does that change the picture?
Even if it was our money three decades ago utilized to dig thousands of deep tube wells within India and Bangladesh, the results would have been same. At that time, experts persuaded citizens to consume well water. At that time, well water was assumed to be safe and without bacteria that cause water-borne ailments like diarrhea. According to latest news the United States Geological Survey is initiating a project in which hydrological, geological and geochemical information will be utilized to build up criteria that will discover and record sources of protected low-arsenic ground water. (Welch and Stollenwerth, 2002) This project includes the burrowing of new deep bore wells which might facilitate in determining arsenic levels in Meghna and Ganges both river basins. Local people do not have to spend their money.
