Hagar contemplated and in light of the angel’s words, she decided to return to Abraham’s house. She finally had a son who was named Ishmael. It is necessary to highlight at this point that Abraham was over eighty years of age when Ishmael was born. The Hebrew bible dictates that Abraham circumcised Ishmael when Ishmael was thirteen years of age. However, the very same year, Abraham’s wife Sarah became pregnant with her second son, Isaac. Further on, the Hebrew Bible is slightly ambiguous whether Sarah saw Ishmael playing with Isaac or mocking Isaac at being younger than him. However, it is clear that Sarah was furious at what she saw and immediately spoke to Abraham about banishing Hagar and his mother-by-birth from the house. Sarah was in such a rage that she immediately disinherited Ishmael and wanted nothing more to do with him.

Ishmael on the other hand, was very dear to Abraham and it was for the same reason that Abraham was reluctant in complying with Sarah’s request. However, Abraham could not resist Sarah’s anguish for long and finally gave into his wife’s request. He gave in to Sarah’s request when God reassured Abraham that He would take care of Ishmael because of the fact that Ishmael was a descendent of Abraham.
