Training and development plays a key role in the strategic and tactical functions of a modern day organization. It remains one of the most important of Human Resource functions regardless of the size of the organization and the nature of the products and/or services it sells. Training and development has gone beyond the context of simply enabling employees to work efficiently for the organization. It is now considered to be an integral part of the organization’s internal functions.
The depth of the implications of training and development has been realized for their vast nature (Waine, 1995). As a result, it comes as no surprise that the body of literature on training and development has experienced a considerable expansion over time. Training and development, as it is comprehended in modern day terms, is the execution of highly organized trainings meant to address pre-established areas of weaknesses for employees.
The reason because of which training and development is given such a high degree of relevance is because the need to adapt to and respond to the requirements of changing times has rendered it compulsory for organizations to ensure that the most important part of their asset: their human capital, is fully prepared to address these changes. As a result of this, training has evolved from being limited to orchestrated classrooms to a point where there are different types of trainings with each type designed to address a specific area and kind of training need.
